Shortlist Viking if you would rather arrive at a French river with the week already arranged than assemble it yourself. Across the four France programmes it currently publishes, the operator prints a guided-tour count on every itinerary and keeps a single inclusion list that applies across the product, which makes its own France programmes unusually easy to compare with one another before you compare Viking with another operator.

What it does well on French rivers

A single inclusion list
Most of what Viking includes is published in one place and applies across the product rather than per itinerary, which makes normalising it against another line’s fare unusually quick. The list covers onboard meals, drinks with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, port taxes and fees, and one complimentary shore excursion in every port of call.11

Counted, not implied
Every France programme prints a guided-tour count on its own page — six, seven, five and thirteen across the four. That is rare in this market: most operators describe a shore programme rather than count it, and a count is something you can hold an itinerary to.15710

Purpose-built for the Seine
Viking Radgrid is published as a Seine Longship built for the river rather than adapted to it, and Seine Longship pages publish the guest count and the stateroom count together.34

France’s Finest is published as a fifteen-day programme combining the Paris/Normandy and Lyon/Provence itineraries, with thirteen guided tours.10

The largest published capacity of the six
168 guests on the Seine Longship is the highest capacity any of these operators publishes for a ship it names for a French river. Capacity is not service quality and it is not a measure of how a lounge feels. Where it does bite is at the gangway: 168 people going ashore is a different morning from half that number.3

One excursion per port is a floor, not a menu
The published promise is that a complimentary excursion exists in every port. It is not a statement about how many alternatives you can choose between on any given morning, and nothing we have found from Viking turns it into one.11

Nothing published on active shore time
Four of the other five operators we compare publish something about bicycles or active excursions. For these Viking France programmes we found nothing first-party, and an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. If cycling ashore decides your booking, ask Viking directly rather than assuming either answer.

Before you settle on this one
One honest alternative. Compare it with AmaWaterways, which lists a smaller ship on the Seine and builds a choice of excursion styles — including guided cycling and hiking — into its own published experience programme.
Where two lines are genuinely close on a French river, and on the Seine and at Bordeaux several of them are, we say they are close rather than manufacturing a winner.
The order that works, in our experience, is: pick the river, decide how you want the day ashore arranged, then normalise two fares against the same list of inclusions before you look at either headline number. Availability in the month you can travel usually makes the final call anyway.
